Born to be HCI

Supports converged , compute-only and storage-only nodes in a single Kubernetes Cluster.

Shines best when compute and storage are together within unified HCI nodes of your Kubernetes cluster.

What is Sarkan?

Sarkan is Kubernetes Hyper Converged Data Platform that provides a distributed, scalable, fault-tolerant, highly available and Kubernetes-way fully managed storage.

It can be used with any Kubernetes flavour. It comes with build-in SaunaFS and It is designed to take full advantage of both Kubernetes and SaunaFS. It provides standard Kubernetes management. Additionally it automates SaunaFS administration tasks like configuration, scaling, deployment, upgrades and enables attached disk management. It is all done from Kubernetes itself.

It allows you to create storage resources from disks connected to multiple servers (physical or virtual). These resources can then be used within Kubernetes cluster. You can also share them with other Kubernetes clusters. You can use the storage for general purposes outside of K8s clusters.

It gives the best of both worlds – Kubernetes and SaunaFS, to provide:.
  • an easy way to install SaunaFS  components on a Kubernetes cluster
  • the ability to control all SaunaFS services & operations the Kubernetes way, using kubectl and helm
  • single namesapce created by SaunaFS from physical or virtual drives
  • block and file access for use within Kubernetes as well as external apps or devices if needed

Capabilities and Benefits

Efficient IT Infrastructure Management

Scalability and High performance

Grow from one (no high availability) to thousands of nodes and from single Terabytes to Exabytes of capacity. You can create thousands of snapshots without significant performance impact, whilst offering the same Kubernetes management.

Containerization Management Platform

No vendor lock-in and Flexibility

Use any Linux & Kubernetes distribution, deployed on bare metal, virtual machine, dedicated public cloud servers or even a mix of the above. You can use HDD, SSD, NVME, SMR drives on commodity or commercial servers.

Scalable Kubernetes Storage

Advanced and unique storage features

Build-in highly available, redundant and scalable SaunaFS storage with CRC data integrity, Copy-on-Write Snapshots and Fast Metadata Performance. Kubernetes components provide read-write mounts of persistent volume on multiple Kubernetes nodes (ReadWriteMany). Mount corruption detection and recovery, cluster split-brain scenario prevention, automated physical and/or virtual disks management and self-healing of all components.

Streamlined Application Workflow

Manageability and Observability

Manage all resources the Kubernetes way with helm charts and/or other Kubernetes management tools, Easily add nodes, redistribute data and services in case of node or disk failure. Use Kubernetes native tools for all storage tasks; create and manage PVs, add labels, change filesystem, format or add/remove drives or nodes, to name just a few options. Use standard monitoring tools like Prometheus, FluentBit/D for indepth inspection of storage and applications.

Sarkan provides full control over Kubernetes & SaunaFS from a single platform.

Security and Multi-tenancy

Create separate storage and compute resources with Kubernetes namespaces. SaunaFS clusters can use dedicated nodes or just disks, available within a single Kubernetes cluster. Protect volumes and data with permissions, multiple erasure coding levels, instant atomic, Copy-on-Write snapshots (do not require clones) for users and ransomware protection. Protect infrastructure, services and data from SPoF.

Full Control Over Kubernetes

Cost-efficiency & Reduced CapEx and OpEx

It requires less hardware so it brings energy consumption and emissions of the data center down. Fewer components lower the complexity and time needed for management. Depending on use case your cost can be reduced even further thanks to our simple, competitive pricing based on node count and total: capacity.

Use cases

Sarkan boosts IT infrastructure management efficiency by automating tasks related to Kubernetes & SaunaFS.

Kubernetes Storage

If you need built-in efficient storage for Kubernetes, managed Kubernetes way, and controlled by Kubernetes, then Sarkan is the way to go. You can install it on existing Kubernetes cluster or separate cluster and share its resources to other Kubernetes clusters.

Sarkan: Gain Control Over Kubernetes & SaunaFS

Kubernetes HCI platform

Sarkan can be set-up as Kubernetes platform by itself. It provides Vanilla Kubernetes build on top of Ubuntu 2204 LTS minimum ISO with use of Kubeadm, Keepalived, HAproxy, Flannel, MetalLB.

Sarkan provides hassle-free disk management for Kubernetes & SaunaFS, simplifying configuration and scaling.

External Storage

Sarkan with help of SaunaFS native client, NFS and S3 clients-gateways can be used to provide efficient yet multi Active-Active access for any SaunaFS use case.

Kubernetes is an open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications.

Kubernetes

Kubernetes is a portable, extensible, open source platform for managing containerized workloads and services, that facilitates both declarative configuration and automation. It has a large, rapidly growing ecosystem. Kubernetes services, support, and tools are widely available. The name Kubernetes originates from Greek, meaning helmsman or pilot. K8s as an abbreviation results from counting the eight letters between the “K” and the “s”. Google open-sourced the Kubernetes project in 2014. Kubernetes combines over 15 years of Google’s experience running production workloads at scale with best-of-breed ideas and practices from the community.

Automate Administrative Tasks in Kubernetes & SaunaFS

Sarkan Operators

Sarkan provides components that are the glue enabling SaunaFs to work with Kubernetes. It is built according to Kubernetes and SaunaFS standards, keeping security and performance at its core:

  • SaunaFS Container Storage Interface (CSI) allows you to use SaunaFS storage resources by Kubernetes cluster internally and/or externally as persistent storage volumes.
  • SaunaFS operator orchestrates all SaunaFS services so they maintain configuration, stay available, and are scaled properly for the best performance and security.
  • Hostdisk CSI manages disk drives attached to nodes so they can be consumed by Sarkan cluster across whole cluster.
  • Storage exporter for Promotheus monitoring with all the metrics provided by data platform components.
