CloudFest 2024 has come and gone, but the impressions and the momentum it has created will stay with me for a long time. First and foremost, our latest project, Sarkan, has taken off like a rocket. It was at CloudFest, with over 8,000 participants, that we started talking about it. Seemingly trivial topics turned out to be the great beginning of this new adventure.
The conference was very prestigious, bringing together the world’s leading cloud service providers. The event was organized with great fanfare, some even said it was just for show, but for me the effect was really wow!!! I met a lot of different people there, which was a big surprise, because most cloud conferences have a certain type of people.
Let me tell you about two examples:
I talked to a representative of a company using NFS 3 for ReadWriteMany functionality, which comes with low stability, no fault tolerance, and poor performance. The feeling when you see the spark in the other person’s eye, the spark of interest, excitement, that it can be done better, that someone has a solution to the problem. Of course, we exchanged contacts and are talking about PoC 😊.
Another guy was from a completely different world 😊, who builds DRBD in memory. We had a very interesting conversation about running projects, life, philosophy and long-distance travel: he drove a Tesla from Great Britain to the German CloudFest.
It was a great honor to be invited by Leil to share a stand with them. Thank you very much! Although I was personally surprised by the small exhibition area, as there were only 2 halls, the interest in our stand was very high. This is evidenced, if only by the number of advertising leaflets about Sarkan that we distributed. We gave away everything that was prepared for the event.💪💪
Also worth mentioning is the conversation between Piotr Modrzyk from Leil Storage and Uwe Kemmer from Western Digital: “Green Solutions for the Future”. In short, how to use SMR disks, or rather, turn off some of the disks to save energy (even 50%). In the era of the race to reduce the greenhouse effect, this is, in my opinion, a very catchy topic. In addition, this solution brings high-availability storage closer to tape in terms of emissions. Many companies cannot afford the data recovery times offered by LTO.
And finally, the fun began.
Here the question arises: can you be a participant of a large international cloud event CloudFest 2024 and be transported to a fairy-tale land?
The answer is, of course, yes!
Serious people from the broad IT industry are children at heart, because otherwise where would our innovative solutions like Sarkan come from? 😊 Right, Paweł?
We went for a ride on a roller coaster to a fairy-tale land for new ideas and inspiration. There was also a train connecting the hotels and restaurants with the main venue, along the way you could admire the park filled with buildings from Andersen’s fairy tales, gnomes and all sorts of fairies, wizards and sorceresses.
In the evenings, however, the main social and networking life took place at parties with live bands.
The four days of CloudFest 2024 flew by like a storm. I’m looking forward to next year, and I will keep the 20th anniversary of the event in my memory as an amazing cloud inspiration for my further activities for Sarkan.
